Thurman Munson was one of the greatest to ever wear pinstripes. From 1969-1979, the New York Yankees star catcher made 7 All-Star teams, won 3 Gold Glove awards, the Rookie of the Year in 1970, the MVP award in 1976, and helped the Yankees win the World Series in 1977 and 1978. His leadership earned him the Captain role in 1976; the first Yankees Captain since Lou Gehrig had retired in 1939! Sadly, Munson passed away in a plane crash during the 1979 season leaving a hole in many hearts.
Just Rip It broke a 1970 Topps Series 2 cello pack and pulled a pack-fresh, stunning copy of Thurman Munson’s rookie card.
The PSA POP report lists only FOUR Munson rookies graded PSA 10. You’re never guaranteed a PSA 10 but pack-fresh cards have the best chance. The back is slightly off-center so even if this card does not come back a ten, there are only 87 cards graded PSA 9 and 801 graded PSA 8 without the qualifiers. This isn’t even our card and we’re hoping for a high grade; we’d like to see some hobby history! As you heard in the video, the last PSA 10 sold for $99,000.
This pull takes us back to the days when Simon and Garfunkel and CCR ruled the radio, the original Hawaii Five-O was on TV, and a pack of Topps baseball cards set you back a cool dime. Maybe you or your dad put those Topps cards in your bike spokes to make motorcycle sounds.
Vintage-card pulls are always special. With modern products, especially high-end products, it is much easier to know if a big card is still available to be pulled. Quality control, numbered cards, the Internet, social media, etc. all help us keep track of big cards. We truly have no idea how many vintage packs are still sealed let alone the cards inside! To find a sealed pack of 1970 Topps baseball cards and pull a rookie card of Thurman Munson is spectacular!
